Top Fine Dining Restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai

Being a foodie, I love everything from street side joints to cafés and regular restaurants but nothing can compare to an evening at a fine dining restaurant. The sleek décor, the crisp tablecloth and the gourmet food served ever so stylishly, all add up to make it an experience well worth the big bucks. Once limited to swish five-star hotels, there is now a whole range of stand-alone restaurants that have opened up and serve some delectable cuisine. Here are some worth trying out in Delhi and Mumbai and they happen to be my favourites as well.

Fine Dining In Delhi

Indian Accent

It is here that Chef Manish Mehrotra kicked off a new trend with his bold makeover of Indian cuisine. The idea: give a twist to traditional dishes by throwing in the odd foreign flavour and trying out experimental pairings. So tickle your taste buds with blue cheese naan, chicken tikka quesadilla with Swiss gruyere and pink peppercorn raita (yogurt), Panko crusted bharwan mirch (stuffed chilli) with goat cheese mousse, pork belly bhuna, and mishti doi (yogurt based dessert) cannoli. You get the picture.. If it’s your first time, I recommend their six-course tasting menu as it’s the perfect introduction to their style.

This restaurant has caught the global eye by catapulting Indian food into the fine dining category. Indian Accent has  been  featured as one of the best restaurants in Asia.

Located in Delhi’s most luxurious mall (DLF Emporio) is this classy fine dining restaurant offering seven different cuisines– North Indian, Thai, Chinese, Southern Coastal Indian, Arabic or European. And they do justice to all! Go for their Sunday brunch and get spoilt silly with the food choices. They even offer unique cocktails that are matched with different cuisines. So you won’t be left wondering if  your drink complements your choice of cuisine.

Olive Bar & Kitchen

White walls, pebbled courtyard and seating under the shade of a huge Banyan tree in the backdrop of the iconic Qutab Minar is one of Delhi’s most popular spots for a romantic meal. The super-thin crust wood-fired pizzas at Olive Bar & Kitchen are a class apart and the variety of Italian food is mind-boggling. Signature dishes such as Hokkaido Scallop & Octopus, Chilean Sea Bass with Pork Belly and Seafood Gnocchi & Gratin are definite must-haves. Make sure you save some of your appetite for the decadent Tiramisu. I personally love their Sunday brunch which is quite popular. Confession – I once ate for five hours here gorging on salads, pastas, pizzas and dessert, and of course endless glasses of champagne.

Its sleek interiors transport you to another world as you step inside. Back lit blue glass, woodwork, soft golden lights and a high celling give a sense of space and you know this classy Michelin star restaurant means business. Contemporary Cantonese cuisine has never tasted better. There’s a bar and a private dining area as well. Whatever you order is bound to delight you – whether it’s the Hakka steamed Dimsum Basket, braised pork belly, wok-fried lobster or the thousand layer puff with sesame, each one is bursting with  different flavours.

Masala Library

Can Indian food be quirky and classy? Can it finally break the shackles of being featured as greasy and occupy pride of place in fine-dining restaurants? A few years back this may not have been the case, but  Masala Library has changed all that by  mastering  molecular gastronomy and giving birth to what chefs call progressive Indian cuisine – basically food that tastes like you expect it to but looks altogether different. The result is dishes like Pesto Kebab, deconstructed Pao Bhaji (a popular street-side dish in Mumbai made of spicy mashed vegetables with bread) , Ghevar cheesecake, Jalebi (Indian dessert) caviar and wild mushroom chai (tea). Even  the skeptics will come out convinced that new age chefs know how to make Indian food hip and cool.

 Royal China

This swish and swanky restaurant in South Mumbai serving delicious Cantonese fare, has won many palates with its authentic, aromatic dishes. Loyalists swear by it and keep returning for their favourite dishes such as Crispy Aromatic duck, prawns wrapped in bacon, Singapore chilli crab (that’s right) and fresh lobster. It also isn’t as expensive as one would expect from a fine dining restaurant.
