One of the easiest escapes from Freetown is a trip to Banana Island, just a quick boat crossing from the Freetown Peninsula.

There are three islands - Dublin, Ricketts and Mes-Meheux. The first two have a combined population of about 900 people, many of them descendants of formerly enslaved people from the Americas who settled on the island in the 19th century.
•
Dublin, the largest island, is known for its beaches. We visited on a rainy day, so instead of heading to the beach we checked out the sights. This is St. Luke’s, an Anglican Church.

Banana Islands is a popular day trip from Freetown. They are made of three islands - Dublin, Ricketts and Mes-Meheux and can be reached in about one hour by car + 30 minutes by boat from Freetown. A lovely place for a day at the beach (Big Sand Beach is the place for that!) they are actually rich in history - they were used for the trade of slaves to the United States by the English. Once slavery was abolished, about 1000 former slaves returned to settle there. Today about 800 people live there.
