One of the easiest escapes from Freetown is a trip to Banana Island, just a quick boat crossing from the Freetown Peninsula.

There are three islands - Dublin, Ricketts and Mes-Meheux. The first two have a combined population of about 900 people, many of them descendants of formerly enslaved people from the Americas who settled on the island in the 19th century.

Dublin, the largest island, is known for its beaches. We visited on a rainy day, so instead of heading to the beach we checked out the sights. This is St. Luke’s, an Anglican Church.
