The first two have a combined population of about 900 people, many of them descendants of formerly enslaved people from the Americas who settled on the island in the 19th century. • Dublin, the largest island, is known for its beaches. We visited on a rainy day, so instead of heading to the beach we checked out the sights. A lovely place for a day at the beach (Big Sand Beach is the place for that!) they are actually rich in history - they were used for the trade of slaves to the United States by the English. Once slavery was abolished, about 1000 former slaves returned to settle there.
